It's been 30 years to the day since the death of legendary musician John Lennon and some Beatles fans mark this as the day the music died.
Normally when tragedy strikes in this era, we would be wisked away to special report from a national network. However on this day in 1980, a sports announcer would be the one to deliver the news.
It was Monday Night Football's Howard Cosell who delivered the news to a nation during the Dolphins/Patriots affair in the waning seconds of a close game. Cosell who was friends with Lennon and even had him as a guest back in 1974 during a halftime report, questioned whether or not that he should deliver the news to the nation or wait until the appropriate moment.
Howard being Howard knew the magnitude of this was more important than the game itself and decided to let the world know about it:
Neither Lennon nor Cosell is alive to speak about this day but for one period of time the world of sports and the world of music were united.
RIP Howard Cosell and John Lennon.
