Following Lincoln's election in November, southern states began making moves to leave the Union. As even members of Buchanan's own cabinet began jumping ship, senators and, surprisingly, a delegation of Virginians including a former president, made attempts to hold the Union together by convening a "Peace Convention" at a Washington hotel.
