Wtop Weather| Wbal weather: WASHINGTON - It's still more than a week until winter officially begins, but the D.C. region saw its first snow of the season Friday.
A clipper system that moved into the area triggered snow flurries and snow showers Friday morning and afternoon.
The snow coated lawns and roads, but didn't amount to any actual accumulation.
It did however, catch people off guard.
Montgomery and Frederick counties in Maryland and Loudoun County in Virginia saw the most snow, ABC 7 meteorologist Chris Naille says.
Some areas didn't see any flakes.
The surprise snow led to multiple traffic accidents on major roadways like I-270, Rockville Pike, I-70 and I-83.
WTOP Traffic's Bob Marbourg reported the roads were "incredibly slippery" and may have a glaze of ice over them.
Maryland State Police enacted a snow emergency plan in Frederick and Washington counties, and salt trucks were treating roads.
Frederick County also canceled all afternoon and evening activities as a result of the weather. Click here for more closings and delays.
The winter weather won't last through the weekend.
Saturday will be the nicest day of the weekend, with sunshine and temperatures in the mid to upper 40s.
Rain is predicted for Sunday. Areas to the west could see a mix of snow and rain into Sunday night.

Wtop| Wtop Weather| nbc4| Wtop news: HUNTINGTOWN, Md. - More than 100 dogs were pulled from a burning house in Calvert County Sunday morning.
"We were able to extinguish all of the fire, and remove 129 animals from the house," says Jonathan Riffe, Chief of the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department.
The one-story house on the 1200 block of Neptune Lane now has a blue blue covering the roof, and sits on a large piece of property.
Riffe says more than 50 firefighters helped rescue the animals from the house. He says the animals were a mixture of pit bulls, rottweilers and chihuahuas.
In total, he says there are more than 600 animals on the property.
Riffe says four dogs died in the fire, but nobody was injured and the investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
The house is listed as a breeder for several kinds of dogs.
A neighbor tells WTOP that they're not surprised they had so many animals on their property, but wonders if the owners took their love of animals too far with so many animals crammed into a tiny space.
